THE ORCHARD UNIT, ST BERNARDS HOSPITAL, EALING

The Orchard Unit at St Bernards Hospital in Ealing has been designed specifically for women who require enhanced levels of treatment within a medium secure setting. The scheme provides 60 patient spaces, for patients admitted from high secure, low secure and psychiatric intensive care units.

 

The unit opened in September 2007 and is run by the West London Mental Health NHS Trust and Kier Health, the principal supply chain partner. The project was completed on time, under budget and within ProCure21 guidelines.

 

The design objectives for the interior were to reduce the impact of physical security and safety measures, whilst supporting safe care environments. This objective involved selecting products which minimised self-harm risk whilst ensuring the patients had individual control within safe limits.

 

ECO-Logic electronic water controls and secure sanitaryware was chosen after mock bathrooms were evaluated by the design team, clinical staff and patients.  There were initial pressures on design cost, requiring value engineering which ECO-Logic was able to meet. The design of the patient bedrooms and en-suite bathrooms enabled management observation whilst providing the patient with a safe, private environment.

 

Multi-Outlet Controllers

ECO-Logic Multi-Outlet Electronic Controllers were supplied for the En-suite Bathrooms, comprising a basin, shower and WC; including Secure Sanitaryware for the basins and WCs. All the hot water was thermostatically blended, and the basins outlet and ceiling mounted shower head were from the ECO Secure anti-vandal, anti-ligature range. The solid-state ECO Touch Sensors were chosen for their strength and reliability.

 

Secure ECO-Logic Bathfill Controllers & outlets were specified for the Assisted Bathrooms, ensuring that water flow automatically stopped at preset levels chosen by management. Elsewhere stainless steel WC and basin combination units were installed.

 

Ongoing Installation

Building on the success of the first phase, more rooms have recently been specified with ECO-Logic controls and fittings due to their proven performance and trouble-free installation.
